Internet Searching & Evaluating Information

This is Google searching, but it goes beyond the standard one search box. Using an Advanced Search allows you more options to refine your search based on your search query.

use quotation marks when searching for an exact word or phrase.
EXAMPLE "to be or not to be"

put a sash before a word you want to exclude from your search.
EXAMPLE jaguar speed -car

Expand your search by using OR to include results with one term/phrase or the other.
EXAMPLE choir or singing group

Quickly find a word's definition by typing define:word
EXAMPLE define: hypothesis

Use Google to search within the selected website by typing site: followed by the rest of the website url into the Google search box or web address bar
EXAMPLE site:cdc.gov ebola

Use this to retrieve specific file types on a topic
EXAMPLE file:pdf homeschooling file:ppt mitosis

Doing a reverse image search, allows you to start with an image and then trace back to its origins.

This can be helpful to learn information about where and why and image was originally created.
